Doing something you like

Is also hard.

We’re often shown the achievements and overnight successes of people. But not so often, their hopeless and i-have-no-idea-where-is-it-leading days.
I suspect that it has normalised a misconception that if something feels too hard to do, that means, it’s not for me.

After spending a lot of time learning something new hoping to hear “this is it” and at the end of the day not seeing any progress, it’s easy to think that you don’t have the talent for that. If it’s what you’re born for, shouldn’t it come easy? Maybe some spark, at least? Well, looking at the real stories behind successes that don’t just rely on luck, the answer seems a no.

In reality, nothing of value, comes easy. Real expression takes its time. The mother’s love for her child doesn’t make her pain disappear but gives her the needed strength to face her pregnancy.

  • Ghibli. One of my favourite animation studios. Do you know that they take around ~4 years to make a single movie?
  • Ever wondered how some of the quality lectures on the internet are made? Does it tell the tale of the professor spending several days of preparation in the empty classroom?

These are some examples from many.

We feel pain when doing something hard. We struggle. Our initial work feels like crap. It’s normal to lose hope over time. But, it’s important to gather the strength to get back on track. And, that’s provided by our love for what we do and why we think it’s important to do it.
Keep doing your best. We’re on the same boat.
